A Kurdish and a French journalist died on Monday covering the battle in west Mosul when an IED exploded as the Iraqi security forces advanced on Islamic State positions in the Old city.
The Iraqi Journalists Rights Defense Association said in a statement that Bakhtiyar Haddad who worked with Le Figaro newspaper was killed on Monday when an IED exploded.
Three other French journalists were wounded in the incident and one of them Stephan Villeneuve succumbed to his injuries later according to a statement from France Televisions reported by AFP.
Kawa Haddad, the brother of the deceased Kurdish journalist told a local TV station that the team were around 50-70 meters from the Isis positions when they came under sniper attack and as they ran for cover in one of the houses nearby, an IED exploded.
The French team were near Bab Sinjar and Ras al-Jadda area in west Mosul when they were hit by an IED according to colleagues and friends of Bakhtiyar Haddad who spoke to the Iraqi Journalist Association.
“I am ok. I am immensely saddened for Bakhtiyar and my colleagues,” Samuel Forey one of the wounded journalists tweeted last night.
Seven journalists have died in the first six months of this year and most have been killed in violent clashes. Since 2003, the number of journalists killed have reached 462 according to the Iraqi Journalists Union.
Iraq is one of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists and ranks 158 out of 180 countries rated by the Reporters Without Borders for freedom of press.
